Closing the Gap

Now that were staying with our traditional home leg / away leg format i was wondering as to whether a change in the way matches are won drawn etc is worth looking at.

I have been toying with the idea of proposing moving away from the final result being decided by the overall scoreline and to reward leg performances instead by offering 2 pts for a leg win, 1 point for a draw, 0 for a loss

so the results below would give the following points :

2 Leg Wins = 4 points
Leg win + Leg draw = 3 points
2 Leg Draws = 2 points
Leg Loss + Leg draw = 1 point
2 Leg Losses = 0 points

What i do like about it is that it rewards a great leg performance even though the other leg has perhaps been thumped 4-0.  It should also add a little spice to each leg.

Take the following 2 matches that have been played this season:

Stadium 3-5  Beeston
Beeston walked away with the points whilst Stadiums superb away leg performance only has a footnote in the frames difference column.
Under the new points stucture this great performance would have been rewarded with 2 points making the overall match result a draw.

Arnold 6-2 Phoenix
A comprehensive victory for Arnold with again a good drawn leg performance giving Phoenix 0 Points (demoralising)
With the new structure Arnold would have received 3 points whilst Phoenix would pick up 1 point.

I'm not sure as to whether this would close the gap between the top sides and the others or not, the first example makes a difference but obviously a 7-1 or 8-0 loss would you see you fall 4 points behind rather than just 2 as at the moment.  However i think it would see the top sides draw more matches against the lower teams than winning them.

Any thoughts?

Alright Mike,

Personally speaking i think it's a terrific idea Mike, because once you have won the magical 5th frame there is no bonus for winning the remaining three frame. So if you changed it to frames won and lost every frame is equally important

Also looking at it from other teams point of view as you mentioned it's a added incentive to not give up and battle for ever point!!

Just a matter of interest Mike "Mr Stats man" how would the standings looked had we used this based on the current league standings for this season...........?

Sounds like a job and a half Kwok....I'll look into it.  I don't think it would change the outcome of the league but I think it would see the teams at the bottom with a few more points than they currently have.

I like the sound of it too.  The bit about adding spice to each leg is cool (if there really has to be 2 legs).

Fantastic idea Mike. At least there is a chance of your team picking up a point even if you have drawn at home and lost away. That way the frames for and against columns would vertually be defunked. The only time that they would come into play would be at the end of the season with 2 teams tied on points.

Ok I have checked all the results and report the following (if i were to go on mastermind my specialist subject would now be 'the league results of the NHSL 2009/10 season'!!!) .

Anyway the findings of my little project were quite interesting (not to most people I accept! STATTO, STATTO, STATTO!!!    ).

If the result of our matches was based on the Home & Away Leg performance as suggested rather than the combined scoreline we currently use, the outcome with just 1 match to go is slightly different and in a positive way you'll be pleased to hear.  Obviously Super Elites have cruised the league however it's a little closer with just 6 ponts separating them and Beeston.  That's just 2 wins in this format compared to 2 wins and a draw currently. 2nd spot would be going right down to the last game with Beeston & Pegasus only seperated by 3 points, remember it is now 3 or 4 pts for a win rather than just 2.  The most exciting thing that came out of it though was how much closer Stadium are to breaking into the top 4.  In the real world they are 3 wins worse off than Arnold & Pegasus however with this format they are only a 2 leg win and a two leg loss for Arnold away from breaking into the top 4 (add to this the fact Arnold were handed an 8-0 walkover and things might be even closer).  Stadium have benefited by picking up a point by drawing a leg in most of the games that they lost. At the other end of the table there was no saving Mapperley from bottom spot I'm afraid although they are now 1 draw better off and also picked up moral boosting solidatory points against Pegasus & Arnold.  I have given BCI Braves their docked points back for the purpose of this project yet strangely they faired worse falling behind Phoenix in the table due to Phoenix similar to Stadium in picking up plenty of leg draws in their defeats.

So all in all it looks quite good.  Super Elites win league as they should but a little closrer, 2nd spot still not decided going into the last game, Stadium just a win away from breaking the big 4, and the bottom clubs taking points off the big 4.  Right I need to get a life.....i'm off to the pub!!!

Here are the 2 league tables as at 13 matches (Current league table 1st)

The change where phoenix finished above BCI Braves on the revised table is not too strange.  As Phoenix won more frames you could argue that it is a fairer table.

Great Work Mike

Now thats what i call service Matey   Hope you enjoyed a good  :drink: down the pub after, Well Deserved :bravo:

Impressive and very interesting stats Mike, it's another one of your great ideas  Mike that could add that liitle extra spice to the league. I think it's a cracking idea as it makes every frame equally as important as the first, plus it gives other teams bonuses for battling on!!!

If Frames count as legs we'll have to watch out for 8Pints will finish legless
