Title: Report Event 5 - Nottingham Grand Prix
Post by: Mike Langdon on 25 May 2010
Ice Cool Ross Wins Event 5

Stuart Ross kept a cool head to win event 5 on what was an uncomfortably hot Nottingham Grand Prix and become the 4th different winner thus far.  In fact 3 of the semi-finalists had not been that far before perhaps showing that November's Grand Finals could be wide open.  The Long Eaton cueist beat Jamie Sampson 3-1 in the final having seen off Malc Belshaw in the semi's.  Earlier in the day Ross enjoyed two nil wins over Danny Castel-Nuovo and Joe Trout whilst gaining a draw against Wayne Martin to top Group C.  The highest break of the day was from Nottingham Legend Bash Maqsood who knocked in a wonderful 91 against the previous two events winner Jason Stockton who surprisingly failed to progress from his group.  Stuart Ross has now moved into second place in the rankings with just 600 points separating 1st place from 3rd.  We managed to bank a further £125 for the finals prize fund, which now stands at £550.

there there Samo....you have to learn to mix it with all different styles of player. It's what makes snooker so fascinating and we would certainly lose something if we all played the game the same way.  The simple truth is you missed lots of balls in the final purely cause you let yourself get frustrated whilst Stuart who is an excellent match player with exceptional levels of concentration just knocked em off.  I'm nicknaming Stuart 'The Wall' as he seems to be the breaking point for many a player in the marathon which is the sunday snooker tournament.

well played though mate a final is a step further than many players have managed (Martin, Moore, Gratton, Brooks) to name a few so your heading in the right direction.

One thing's for sure i shall be taking a leaf out of Mr Ross's book when we play our Pegasus match.....better book an early table  ;) ;)

Cheers

Mike

I was really impressed with your concentration levels in the semi-final against me Jamie.  I'm not used to playing snooker for that long and by the time we met I had nothing left.  You managed to keep it together really well and I fancied you to win the final, particularly after knocking out the impressive Bash Maqsood.  I think you probably would have won against anyone else but Stuart.  I totally admire players like Stuart who always give 100% to every shot.  They get a lot of stick but if we had to pick a team a player like Stuart would be the first name down on our team sheets!

It was a great event yet again and that finals pot is really starting to mount up now - £550 and growing.  One thing is for sure, there will be some tense matches on grand finals day - can't wait!

Well done Mike - another great competition.

Congratulations to Stuart and Jamie on winning and getting runner up.
Great performances on a really tricky day with the handicaps coming into play in a big way.

There are some really, really tricky players around the 7 to 35 bracket who will do some serious damage given half the chance.

Who fancies playing Rick Worrall off 35!!!!! - he is very dangerous along with the likes of Langdon, Butler, Crombie, Parnham etc.

This competition is really hotting up now and I suspect receive a larger entry as the months go by as we get closer to the final 16.

Great organisation Mike.

Maybe i was a little hot headed in my first post  yes i agree with all the comments made about keeping my head and not letting anyone get to me and play my game  im not saying he was playing slowly on purpose but he did slow down a little more than usual as he knew i was getting fustrated. If i knew i was getting to him....id prob do the same  HUSH   next month revenge month

Hi Wayne, think I've sorted rankings now...thanks

I think you're right the handicaps are really starting to kick in now ie me beating Jason Stockton on Sunday.  I think those really good players who are hoping to qualify by just turning up to one or two events may find it a little harder than they think.  It was certainly easier to get the points in the bag earlier than it's gonna be now....bananna skins everywhere
