Title: Charity Shield raises an incredible £750
Post by: Steve Butler on 07 September 2011
Well done to everyone who attended BCI Snooker Centre on Tuesday 6th September for the 4th Annual Charity Shield.  An amazing £375 was raised on the night and this was matched by Nazareth House Snooker League bringing the total to an incredible £750.

Paul Wilkinson aka "Spider" was unable to be there in person as he was regrettably admitted to hospital the night before.  However, his three beautiful daughters came along and they were obviously emotional when it was announced that the £750 raised would be donated to Spider and his family to help them through these tough times.

The match finished 7-6 to Nottingham & Notts Institutes Association and so the Charity Shield goes back to them for a year.  Well done to the NNIA team and also to the NHSL team for putting up a good fight.

The match table witnessed a terrific high break competition where players could pay £1 to try and clear the table. With the colours on their spots they were allowed to place three reds and the cue ball anywhere they liked.  The pressure clearly got to a lot of players as the competition started with some very small breaks.  Sean Hopkin soon set the standard with a 36 but then Bash Maqsood hit a 49.  Bash then got a maximum clearance of 51.  Sean Hopkin and Manny Sant also hit maximums which set up a nice 3 way sudden death play-off in front of a large audience.  The pressure was huge and poor Manny missed the opening red.  Sean then broke down on just 9 but Bash showed his class with a 42 break to take the trophy.

Spider's daughters present The Spider Trophy to Bash Maqsood

Thanks to everyone who attended for their generosity (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generosity) and also to those who couldn't attend who sent some money anyway.  Also thanks to BCI for the use of their tables and to Bob Wright for helping me to organise everything.

It was a superb evening which really made me proud of the Nottingham Snooker Community.

Sean Croft filmed the high break competition so we can look forward to seeing that soon I hope.

I know some people took a few photos so please email them to me or put them on facebook so that I can share them in the gallery.

Hi all, I just like to say that yesterday was the best evening of snooker i have had for years. I really enjoyed it all and it made a change just to play a little losely and for a change not worrying if you win or lose.

I am so glad that people made the effort to attend and it really was a great evening.

I am of course so glad i won the break prize - Not for myself but for spider as i know he will be overjoyed knowing that someone won it who he knows well. I was hoping no one would match my 51 , but with manny's competitive streak and Hopkins Eagle eyes eyeing up the trophy i knew someone else else would get it.

It was an enjoyable thrill at the end.

Mind you i was surprised at the position some experience players placed there 3 reds !! they certainly know how to make a clearance harder than it should be.
Thanks also to Pete and carol at BCI.
I will make sure i get some photos with the trophy and spider when i go to see him and put them in the post.

Finally, his daughters were a great and we all wish the family the very best at these difficult times.

Cheers all - Bash and love to the 3 babes !! and spider of course
