Post by: Steve Butler on 27 April 2013
A Charity Race Night was held at Willowbrook Club in Gedling on Friday evening.

Glenn Price hosted the evening and he was superb.  He put in a lot of time and effort, both on the night and for weeks beforehand and it paid off as the event ran very smoothly.

John Vollam's chilli dishes also went down well with the punters, with £1 from each one sold going into the charity pot.

Sue Wright and Callum McKenzie did a terrific job taking bets and keeping track of the money raised.

Race 1: The Snooker Loopy Chase
The most popular horse in this opening race was The Grinder ridden by Cliff Thorburn.  The race was won by Rocket ridden by Ronnie O'Sullivan and 5 punters shared the tote pot. 8 ran.

Race 2: Children's Classic
The second race saw a flurry of bets but only two punters picked the winner, Harry Potter ridden by Hermione.  8 ran.

Race 3: The Bar Fly Challenge
Even more bets were placed on this race and the joint favourites were The Husky ridden by K Hunt and Gezza's GG ridden by G Hennessey.  Needless to say, neither of them won.  The winner was Fashionably Late ridden by C&M Jordan and the tote pot was shared by 5 lucky punters.  8 ran.

Over to the snooker after race 3 then.  Jon & Steve will be playing a frame of snooker in every snooker and social club throughout Nottinghamshire and Jon was trailing 7-6 on the Tour scorecard going into this one.  It was a scrappy frame for the most part but Glenn maintained the crowd's interest with some very amusing commentary.  The screams of "where's the cue ball going?" even managed to prevent Bob Walker from falling asleep!  The frame did however spring into life when it came down to the colours.  Jon's superb pots on the blue and pink were greeted with gasps of admiration from the audience as they witnessed him steal the frame and level the tour at 7-7.  2 ran.

Race 4: The Drinkers Dabble
The clear favourite in this race was Bushwacker ridden by Crocodile Dundee.  Quite apt considering Jon's mate Dave was in the room (he's Australian!).  Favourites never win though do they.  Brass Money ridden by B Luddy Cold crossed the line first, much to the delight of 6 lucky punters.  8 ran.

Race 5: The 90's Classic
This was the big one, the tri-cast race.  Glenn had been busy filling up the board (at 50p a go) and the very very lucky punter who managed to predict 1-2-3 in the correct order was going to take home £75.  The favourite, Babe ridden by Christine Cavanauhgh, came in third.  Second was As Good As It Gets ridden by Jack Nicholson.  The winner, which was backed by 5 punters, was Boogie Nights ridden by Mark Whalberg.  Tri-Cast winner was 'the bird behind the bar'!  8 ran.

Race 6: Classic TV
For this race, Glenn auctioned off the horses.  This put a substantial amount of money in the charity pot and yet again Glenn's skills with the microphone made a big difference.  He even convinced me to part with some of my children's inheritence to purchase Dead Parrot!  The race was won by.....wait for it......Dead Parrot (cheers Glenn!).  You can tell by the photo how pleased I was about that!  8 ran.

Everyone was having such a good time that We even had two bonus races which helped to boost the coffers further still.  While these were going on, Jon played his mate Dave on the snooker table and this was followed by a big money match between Matt Walters and Steve Burrows (£2.50 each).

As the evening drew to a close around 11pm Glenn, Sue and Callum did a count up of the charity pot.  If we'd raised £200 that would have been amazing, £300 would have been astounding but the final total of £425 just blew us all away.  What a superb evening and yet again, I've got to thank Glenn Price.  The amount of effort he put into making the evening a success was truly magnificent.

Thanks to everyone who came along and dug deep for a fantastic cause.
