The Nazareth House Snooker League will be holding its Annual General Meeting at 8pm on Thursday 11th September 2008 at Lenton Liberal Club.

If any team managers are unable to attend, please inform me in advance.  I have already received confirmation from Jack Packer (Wollaton RBL) that he will be unable to attend in person but that he will definitely be entering a team for the 2008/09 season.

Any proposals for rule changes can either be emailed to me or posted on this thread.

Can we see something in writing at the A.G.M. where you dont have to verbally nominate a free ball.

I'll bring my copy of the official world snooker rules along with me!  ;)

However, they will only say the same as what is on the nhsl website under 'rules of snooker':

SECTION 2
13. Free Ball
A free ball is a ball which the striker nominates as the ball on when snookered after a foul (see Section 3 Rule 10).

SECTION 3
10. Snookered After a Foul
After a foul, if the cue-ball is snookered, the referee shall state FREE BALL (see Section 2, Rule 16).
(a) If the player next in turn elects to play the next stroke,
(i) he may nominate any ball as the ball on, and
(ii) any nominated ball shall be regarded as, and acquire the value of, the ball on except that, if potted, is shall then be spotted.
(b) It is a foul if the cue-ball should
(i) fail to hit the nominated ball first, or first simultaneously with the ball on, or
(ii) be snookered on all Reds, or the ball on, by the free ball thus nominated, except when the Pink and Black are the only object balls remaining on the table.
(c) If the free ball is potted, it is spotted and the value of the ball on is scored.
(d) If a ball on is potted, after the cue-ball struck the nominated ball first, or simultaneously with a ball on, the ball on is scored and remains off the table.
(e) If both the nominated ball and a ball on are potted, only the ball on is scored unless it was a Red, when each ball potted is scored. The free ball is then spotted and the ball on remains off the table.
(f) If the offender is asked to play again, the free ball call becomes void.

BOTH OF THE ABOVE REFER TO THE 'NOMINATED BALL' - SEE DEFINITION BELOW:

SECTION 2
12. Nominated Ball
(a) A nominated ball is the object ball which the striker declares, or indicates to the satisfaction of the referee, he undertakes to hit with the first impact of the cue-ball.
(b) If requested by the referee, the striker must declare which ball he is on.

The important statements in this definition are:

indicates to the satisfaction of the referee

and

If requested by the referee

The nomination does not have to be made VERBALLY.  It is up to the referee to ask the striker to declare (verbally) if he is unsure which ball the striker is aiming for.  The words the referee should use are "Free ball, please nominate".

I can understand why anyone reading 13. and 10. above without also reading the definition of "12. Nominated Ball" would assume that the nomination has to be made verbally.  However, after reading the definition of a Nominated Ball, I cannot understand why anyone would still be under the impression that the nomination has to be verbal.

Hope this helps!

I would like to put forward that we scrap the awarding of an 8 nil walkover win should a team not turn out. I feel this rule is unfair on all the other teams especially when it impacts on the title race ie. not only do a side get the 2points but they also get +8 frame difference!

In place i would like to see the side that does not turn up get punished by being docked 2 points and the match should be rearranged and played again.

Hi Mike

Just thought i'd put you in the picture of what happens when a team doesn't turn up in the institutes and BDSL. Because each frame is a point, and with 4 players, that's 4 points a match + a point for a win makes 5 points a match. If a team doesn't turn up the game is claimed by their opponents, but instead of 5 points they only get 4 (I wanted it to be 3, but was voted down). The team that didn't turn up lose 5 points (thats the penalty). Doing this encourages teams to think ahead and plan their next weeks match. If they can't get a team then they pospone the match, at no penalty. As league secretary they should notify me of the posponement and re-arrange the match with their opponents. We normally play our matches on a Monday, but posponements can be played at any time if both teams are willing too. As per our game with Stadium, which was posponed from the Monday, because of the NHSL golf day, and played on the Tuesday.
