Ball off the table used by striker

i just thought of something which some of you may know the answer to.

In a frame of snooker, lets say for example the black is off the spot and in line to potting the black in one of the pockets a red is in the path. However, one is "not sure" if when the black is respotted it will; actually pass the red and go into the pocket. Can you get another ball out of the pocket (which will obviously) be a red) place it on the black spot, to check if indeed the black will pot, and then after checking put the red back and continue your choice of shot.

i.e you have used a potted red to help you decision.

I am sure you cant' do this but was just wondering where in the rules is this possible covered.

The situation actually happened in my match with Mr hallet. I was actually on the blue and had a choice of reds to play on. I thought I would play the shot to drop on the red which "may be " was obstructing the path of the black (once the black would be respotted). However , if the black would actually pass that red then there was no need for me to play for that red; I could then  play for another red and then pot the black and the black would then go on its spots and be pottable.

however, it just crossed my mind at the time if a could "use" a potted red and place it on the black spot just to check if the black would pot and then stick the red back in the pocket.

I obviously didn't have the "cheek" to do this but i am sure some like, Hunzla, would have done it.

Anyway, reference to the rule book would be helpful.

Bash

That would be a foul Bash and 7 points penalty!

You need to look in Section 12:

(d) A penalty of seven points is incurred if the striker
(i) uses a ball off the table for any purpose

if i has already put the red ball on the black spot and then left it there (on the black spot0 what would happen??

sorry, i am just getting awkward.
