Currently, the teams finishing 1st and 2nd in each division receive trophies.  It has been suggested that we also give an award of some kind to the team that finishes 3rd in each division, perhaps ?50 cash for the team to celebrate with a few beers.  This would give a few more teams something to play for, particularly in division 1 which is looking like a two horse race.  We welcome your thoughts on this........

Voted in haste before reading your article.  My vote still stands but shouldnt the teams winning or runners-up also deserve a few beers ! !.

Just a random idea I had last night... how about "most improved player" for each division as something extra to award and spur people on? Somehow decided by committee on various stats, breaks, results?

Alan Cunningham

Yes, good idea by ROSS. Now that we have extra cash from people buying on line and no actual Nazareth House' to donate to.  Why couldnt the team captains submit their nomination for a 'most improved player'  or 'most consatant player' and let the committee decide who should get the prize for each division.

Yeah, sounds like a good way of governing it, I think it'd be nice to have a separate individual award...

Good idea Ross - I like the sound of most improved player best with each team putting forward one member.  Most consistant would probably lead towards the better players in team ie for us Chris Brooks who hasn't lost yet in singles this season...and he doesn't need anymore awards!

I reckon most players rather than have a cash reward would prefer a trophy and perhaps a couple of free lessons from Mr Stark.

The ?50 prize could be spent on anything the team choose to spend it on - coincidently our team caricature cost ?50!
What about purchasing a new long rest - certainly required in some clubs!

I wasn't at the last meeting held in February however I understand that the option of paying cash prizes instead of individual trophies was discussed.  To clarify, the Perpetual Challenge Trophies would still be awarded but teams would no longer receive an individual trophy for every player.

The amounts suggested were:

Division 1

Winners ?100
Runners-up ?75
3rd Place ?50

Division 2

Winners ?100
Runners-up ?75
3rd Place ?50

The teams can then decide what they want to do with the cash, eg. they could contact a trophy supplier and purchase trophies themselves.

This takes a lot of the burden off the Committee, in particular Dave Buckley who spends hours each year selecting trophies, getting player names for engraving, collecting and transporting the trophies etc.  Another issue has been where, having spent all that time sorting out the trophies, teams/players don't even bother to turn up at presentations/AGM in order to collect them!  Some still remain uncollected and are gathering dust somewhere.

In addition to the above, a popular suggestion and one which will hopefully get the green light for this season onwards, is for each team captain to select a Player of the Year.  This can be awarded to the player who has turned up every week, been the most consistent, made the most improvement, made the highest break, or simply the player who has played the best throughout the season.  Again the choice of recipent would be left to the team captain (or team players to vote for each other).  A ?10 gift voucher could be awarded to these players or simply ?10 cash.  The total cost for this will be ?10 x 17 teams = ?170.

The above ideas ensure that every team will win something and should hopefully encourage more people to attend the presentation/AGM.

To be agreed at the next meeting on 10th April.

At the last meeting I interpretted it that there would be cash AND Trophies !!.   For 1st, 2nd & 3rd.

I wasn't at the meeting but I know that the Chairman has been suggesting ditching individual trophies in favour of cash prizes for quite a while (for the reasons stated above).  If teams still want trophies the cash prizes on offer will be more than adequate to purchase some very nice ones.  :)

As I wasn't at the meeting I don't know whether, for this season only, the suggestion of trophies+cash prizes was made, perhaps because the league has done very well financially this and last season.  ;D

The above proposal relates to future seasons.

We'll have to discuss it again at the next meeting and reach a decision.  ::)

I have spoken to the Treasurer and the following cash prizes have been agreed for the 2007/08 season:

Division 1
Winners ?100
Runners-up ?75
3rd Place ?50

Division 2
Winners ?100
Runners-up ?75
3rd Place ?50

Knockout Cup
Winners ?100
Runners-up ?75

Knockout Plate
Winners ?100
Runners-up ?75

Scratch Singles
Winner ?30
Runner-up ?10

Handicap Singles
Winner ?30
Runner-up ?10

Handicap Pairs
Winners ?20 each
Runners-up ?10 each

All of these prizes will be paid by cheque at the Annual Presentation Dinner (provisional date 28/7/08).  Any prizes not claimed will be donated to charity.

In addition, perpetual challange trophies will be engraved and awarded in respect of all of the above.  These can then be displayed in clubs until the end of the following season.

Anyone wanting to use the above cash prizes to purchase trophies, plaques, caricatures etc. in advance of the presentation, please email me at nhsl@btinternet.com or telephone Dave Buckley.  Please do this through your team captain/manager.

Cash prizes will be reviewed on an annual basis and will be dependant on league income.
