Charity Shield 2008 - Tuesday 23 September 2008

Planning is already underway for a new event that will be held every September as a season opener for both the NHSL & NNIA leagues.

Pete Trout, Chairman of the NNIA, has already given the go-ahead to hold this event at BCI on 3 tables.

Teams will consist of 11 players and frames will be played as follows:

The winning team will be awarded a brand new trophy (The Charity Shield) which will be engraved with the name of the winning league and then held until the following year.

FORMAT

The evening is designed to be a light hearted affair which is aimed at raising money for charity.

Each player will pay ?2 plus 20p for every foul they make.  Skinflints need not apply!

The winning team will be the one who wins the most frames (ie. it will NOT be based on aggregate scores)

The date for the Charity Shield is Tuesday 23rd September 2008, just prior to the start of the winter season.

Anyone interested in playing in this event should reply to this thread indicating which league they will represent.

In the event that too many players apply, names will be drawn out of a hat and all players not drawn out will be placed on a reserve list.

The inaugural Charity Challenge Shield took place on Tuesday 23rd September 2008 at BCI Snooker Centre, Bulwell.  The match was won by the Nottingham & Notts Institutes Association Snooker League team, although the match turned out to be closer than expected, with Nazareth House Snooker League going down 8-6.

Two teams of fourteen players competed, each paying a £2 entry fee.  A twenty pence penalty was then imposed for every foul shot, of which there were many.  The total amount raised on the night for charity was an impressive £75.

The highest break of the evening was made by the Institutes' Jonathan Mason, a terrific run of 52.  Sam Haugh also had a run of 34 in his frame against Phoenix Cue Sports' owner, Stephen Lally.

Nazareth House Snooker League Secretary, Steve Butler, said "The evening went really well and everyone seemed to enjoy it.  Every time a foul was committed there was a big cheer, it was great fun.  I'd like to thank everyone who came for their support and I'd particularly like to thank Pete Trout and the staff at BCI for providing the use of their tables and facilities.  We're definitely going to make this an annual event from now on."

Nottingham and Notts Institutes Association Secretary, Robert Wright, had the honour of choosing which local charity would receive the £75 raised and he chose the Renal Unit at Nottingham City Hospital.

totaly agree steve it was a very good night played in nice spirit by all players. snooker took a back seat with every one out to enjoy them selfs and raise some cash.

great nite last nite thoroughly enjoyed it, good to see all the guys having a laugh the 20p rule made it a bit more fun, i still want a  20 p refund bob  cant wait for the next one.

fantastic turnout for Nottingham's snooker equivalent to the Ryder Cup...really enjoyed it.  Poor old Zeb made me laugh...well beaten in his frame so he decided he wasn't gonna go down without getting a few 20p's of Daz Clarke. Kinda backfired as Daz laid snooker after snooker to empty Zeb's pockets.

What a fabulous night. Nice to see so many snooker players in one venue, and everyone enjoying the competition. BCI will have to get a bigger car park! It was nice not to take the game seriously for once and have a laugh at each others expense. Sorry about the pun. Win or lose it didn't seem to matter. By the way Steve when do we get our shield?  . Gary-you can have the 20p whenever you like, but at the next one it's 20p a foul stroke for everyone else and 50p for you!!!!!! It would be nice to have a end of season match. Maybe in early May? Anyone up for it? The bi-annual Shield? Crackingly good photo! Shame that we couldn't have got all the players on it. Next time maybe? It's nice when two supposedly rival leagues get on so well. I can only thank Steve Butler for that. Most of you don't know, but Steve and i have had, and will hopefully continue to have meetings at my house where we can talk about what's going off in the leagues and help each other with any problems that occur. Good luck to all in both leagues for the coming season of competitions.

A good night with a few shock results - Gary misfiring on a few cylinders and my thrashing by Pete Trout.
I thought he had 'dodgy knees'!  Dennis Peet had a good win as he told me he could only see out of 1 eye!
Other frames went to black balls - it was that close.
Kwok losing to Clary at home was another upset as Clary assures me his real age is only 106 not 107    

Thanks to Steve and Pete Trout for organising the order of play and creating a calm environment.
Any high breaks?  Pete had a 21 against me!
