WALKER, 13, WINS FIRST TITLE

TRAVIS AND GARLAND MAKE FINALS

Under 16?s goes back to it?s roots

Joel Walker, 13 showed some steel to win his first title in the Under 16 series at the events original venue Willie Thorne?s, Leicester after Potters, Coalville closed down.

Walker awarded the ?Star of the Future? memento for his performances in last years series for finishing in 9th place climbs to 5th spot in the current rankings after beating former Sheffield colleague Mitchell Travis 3-2 in August?s final from 32 players.

Walker with only a break of 31 to offer led 2-0 in the final on the difficult match table, (65-25) ? (47-34) winning the 2nd frame on the pink.
Travis in his first main final convincingly won the next two frames (41-78) ? (15-58) as Walker with a little bit of attitude wobbled.
However the winner stiffened his resolve and easily won the deciding frame (76-9) with two twenty plus breaks.

Walker came through the tough bottom half of the draw which featured two of the top three players in the rankings defeating James Voyce 3-1, No 1 Kyren Wilson also 3-1, Walker a 40 break, Danny Douane 3-2 from 2-1 down and finally 3rd placed now 2nd Nick Jennings 3-0, Walker again a 40 break.

Runner up Travis now 4th accounted for last months finalist Ryan Clark,
Tom Barley 3-0 and Daniel Bestford all 3-0 making a 71 break in the last match and lastly first time semi finalist Sam Harvey in only his 3rd event 3-1 fluking the black in the 3rd frame, Harvey into the top 32 in 26th place from 78 players.

With 13 of the top 32 missing on a hot day none of the other players except the finalists and Harvey made any real progress in the rankings leader Wilson looks to be home and try for the title but with 4 events remaining he mathematically can still be overhauled.

Garland in first final

Wilson won the plate after his last sixteen exit beating Luke Garland in his first final with a struggle 2-1a 49 break to go with runs of 54 and 60 earlier.

Nik Charalambous reached the last eight of the main event for the first time letting slip a 2-0 lead against Jennings losing 3-2 on the pink.
Ian Hay and Tom Barley who edged ex semi finalist Sean Peacock 3-2 in the main event made the quarters in the plate where semi finalist Darren Cook made breaks of 70 and 81.
Adam Bobat reached the last four in the plate defeating Peacock and first event finalist James Jelley 2-0 with a 51 break in the 2nd match.

Breaks on the tighter faster tables otherwise hard to come by from the rest of the field although the heat contributed.
