Hurricane Hussain seals impressive Hucknall Open win
A very enjoyable Hucknall Open snooker tournament was held at Spot On Snooker Club on Sunday 4 August 2019. The event attracted 11 entries and players were split into two groups, one of 6 and one of 5. Every competitor played at least 8 frames and the top 4 players in each group progressed to the quarter-finals.
Bash Maqsood (Bobbers Mill) made three breaks over 50 and won three of his five matches, drawing the other two. Dave Jobling (Newark) and Nav Hussain (West Bridgford) were also playing well and they both qualified for the knockout stage alongside Maqsood. There was a real battle for the fourth qualification spot, Vinnie Dennis (Sutton in Ashfield) missing out due to his defeats to Ashley Dobb (Hucknall) and Dean North (Hucknall). Dobb and North had to play an extra frame decider and it was Dobb who came out on top to reach the knockout stage.
Wayne Martin (Hucknall) was the only player in this group to miss out on qualification, with a defeat to Mick Kirk (Anstey) proving crucial. Steve Butler (Nottingham) and Karl Jones (Hucknall) both impressed, neither player losing a match. Tony Morgan (Kirkby in Ashfield) made a nice 54 break on the way to securing the fourth qualification spot.
Nav Hussain was on fire today. He dropped only one frame during the whole knockout stage and also knocked in a nice 63 break in his semi-final match against Ashley Dobb. There were no breaks of any note in his final victory over Dave Jobling, but some of his long pots were absolutely awesome.
Bash Maqsood made a lovely 90 break in his 2-0 defeat of Mick Kirk but the impressive Jobling saw off Maqsood in the semis.
Ashley Dobb is getting better all the time and he took a frame off Hussain in the semis which is more than many other players did during the day. Surely it is only a matter of time before Dobb reaches a final.
Karl Jones is another player who is on the up. He only just missed out on a semi final place by the odd frame.
