We all had a great day yesterday competing in the Nottingham Snooker Sunday League. Play started at 11am and the last ball was potted at 4pm, so we had 5 hours of play for just £10. Terrific value and fantastic competition. Looking forward to the second round of matches on 15th March .

Tony Matthews won the British boys' billiards titl

Tony Matthews won the British boys' billiards title in 1960 and, in the same year, he was runner-up in the British boys' snooker championship. He went on to become runner-up in the British junior billiards championship in 1961.
Then, in 1962 and 1963, he won both the British junior billiards and snooker championships.

Tony was born in Bulwell and learned the game at Bulwell Church Institute (BCI) where his father, Harold (Lol), was steward for some years. After his successes in the national championships, he was a stalwart member of successful teams at local championship level and was a regular tournament winner.

Tony won the Notts Institutes Association snooker championship for four years in succession against very good opposition. And he made more than a few snooker centuries in the days when such breaks by amateur players were very rare indeed and not all that common in professional play. .

Willie Leigh from Nottingham, was British Boys Bil

Willie Leigh from Nottingham, was British Boys Billiards champion in his youth. He was also a very talented snooker player in the days when snooker was a game played in dark, smoky billiard halls, watched by a handful of enthusiasts.

In 1948, Leigh reached the final of the World Professional Snooker Championships qualifying competition. The winner would earn a place in the last eight, where the big names like Walter Donaldson and snooker legend Fred Davis would join the draw.

With the scores level at 17-17, the crowd inside Burroughes Hall in the heart of London’s Soho district fell to a hush. Leigh, having already beaten Herbert Holt and John Barrie to reach the qualifying final, was facing up and coming young player John Pulman. Just one more victory would take him to the Leicester Square Hall and a shot at glory.

Leigh had his chances, leading 7–5 after the first day and 13–11 after two days. But Pulman kept coming back to force the decider. That was just as close but it was Pulman who got over the line, winning 60–49, potting the final black. It was the nearest talented cueman Leigh got to the major stage during a long career.

Willie earned his living on the green baize. He regularly played at the Mechanics Institute in Nottingham, had a couple of seasons at Butlins, Skegness, gave lessons for £3 an hour, and during the Second World War, while serving in the RAF, he would entertain the officers with his range of trick shots.

He became resident professional at the Royal Snooker Hall, in South Sherwood Street, run by Harold Bush and located beneath the old offices of the Nottingham Evening Post.

Willie Leigh carried on playing snooker, and refereeing, until his death at the age of 65, on November 20 1972. Nine years later, on the same November 20 date, his wife, Ellen, passed away. .
