Hussain beats Abbas to win the Radford Open

Radford Open 2

The final tournament of 2019 attracted 8 entries and players were split into two equal groups.  Every competitor played at least 7 frames and the top 2 players in each group progressed to the semi-finals.

Group A

Wayne Martin (Hucknall) and Steve Butler (Gotham) both progressed to the semi-finals with two wins. Patrick Hort (Nottingham) narrowly lost out to Butler and Callum Hodgman (Hucknall) continues to improve his all round game, a terrific win over Martin the highlight of his day.

Group B

Nav Hussain (West Bridgford) eased through with three wins and a high break of 47. Second place had to be decided by play-off, Yas Abbas (Wollaton) progressing with victory over Adam Hussain (Mapperley). Jon Sully (East Leake) decided not to compete in the play-off.

Knockout Stage

Despite making the highest break of the day (72), Martin went down 2-1 to the impressive Abbas who was playing in his first tournament of 2019.

Hussain and Butler both struggled to find their form in the other semi-final, but Hussain came out on top in the end to set up a final against Abbas.

Hussain got off to a terrific start in the final, making a lovely 65 break that could easily have been a lot more. Abbas came back immediately with a 20 break but Hussain held out to take a 1-0 lead.

Abbas opened up a decent lead in the second frame and laid a nice snooker which Hussain failed to escape from on three occasions. Unfortunately for Abbas, on the fourth attempt Hussain not only hit the yellow but luckily potted it and then cleared the remaining colours to take frame and match. It was perhaps a little harsh on the impressive Abbas but Hussain did take them well to be fair.
