Derbyshire retain County Championship trophy with narrow victory
Following on from their thrilling victory against Nottinghamshire back in October, Derbyshire once again battled against a tremendous effort from the Nottinghamshire side.
The format of the tournament was 13 players from both counties played 1 frame against all 13 opponents with the added pressure of a 20 minute stop clock per frame in operation. A strengthened Derbyshire Team captained by Jimmy Gratton featured 3 new players in the form of former Ex professionals John Giles, Jamie Bodle.
The Derbyshire team went into this match as hot favourites and were looking for a resounding win but it proved to be tougher than originally anticipated when the first session locked at 13 all.
For the rest of the day both teams could not be separated as the tournament ebbed and flowed both teams were keeping a close eye on the results coming in as Steve Butler, Nottinghamshire’s non playing captain, kept the main arena scoreboard up to date, the session scores certainly reflect how close the contest was:
Session scores (Derbyshire first) 13-13,
25-27, 40-38, 50-54, 64-66, 79-77, the final session saw Derbyshire clinch victory 86-83 with Adi Richards beating Toby Simpson to put Derbyshire over the winning line.
Derbyshire Captain Jimmy Gratton said “I know neither team expected this match to be so close with the strengthened Derbyshire team but Notts certainly battled away admirably and had us fighting all the way. The nerves were definitely jangling again at 84-83 when we needed just 1 frame for victory with 2 to play, Fortunately Adi Richards gave us the victory in the penultimate frame against young Toby Simpson I don’t think either Derby or Notts teams could have coped with another final frame decider like we endured at the last match when we edged the match 61-60.”
