Repeat Performance Sees AJ Riding High
Monday Team League (Summer 2023)
Bulwell Church Institute’s “AJ” side are the early pacesetters after week two of eighteen in the Nottingham Snooker team league. In their derby match against stablemates, BCI ‘B’, the AJ team recorded their second 4-1 victory in as many weeks to open up a seven-point gap at the top of the league table.
The match unfolded in a similar fashion to BCI AJ’s previous game, twelve-year old Jacob Reynolds taking the first singles frame and later combining with team captain, Ashley Field, to secure the pairs. Josh Morley then maintained his perfect start to the Summer 2023 season, sealing the bonus points for AJ in the fourth frame.
Second-placed Towers had to reverse their fixtures with Carlton & District Liberal Club owing to the Mansfield side’s match table being unavailable this week, but it affected them little as they collected their first bonus points of the summer season. Bob Walker maintained his 100% record on singles in opening with a win for Carlton, however successive successes for Lea Bradshaw in both of his singles and the pairs ended the match as a contest with a frame to spare.
The Venue (Rainworth) dealt visitors Lenton Liberal Club their first league defeat since the introduction of the new playing format of two singles, one pairs and two singles during the Winter 2022-2023 season. Don Merry and Andy Wain contributed two singles frames each as both teams joined BCI B in a tie for third place on ten points apiece in the league table.
Spot On Hucknall join BCI AJ as the only other undefeated side, this summer. Wayne Martin won two out of two on singles as the Vine Terrace team raced into a 4-0 lead, before Academy A took a consolation fifth frame. The highlight of the match was a third-frame 54 break shared between Darryl Clarke and Ben Cooper on pairs duty – no mean feat when the partners have to play alternate shots! Having fielded the colours of a 99 clearance last week, Academy’s Toby Bowley was again unfortunate in also being on the receiving end of the next-highest break of the season.
Academy Reds had no game this week, while the whole league now breaks (or rests…!!) until 15 May owing to the early May bank holiday immediately followed by the bank holiday for the coronation of King Charles III.
There remains one space available for another team to join the league for the Summer 2023 season. Interested parties should contact league organiser, Jon Shapland, on 07779333087 before 10 May. Matches are played on a home-and-away basis, with only one table required – although home teams can elect to use two tables should they wish. All frames are contested using handicaps, which are assigned to individual players and will be reviewed at the end of the summer.
