Last-Action Diacopoulos Steals The Show On Opening Night
Monday Team League (Summer 2023)
Team snooker got back underway in Nottingham with some impressive performances this week. Nine sides representing seven different venues across Nottingham and the surrounding district will be competing for summer-season honours.
Twelve-year old Jacob Reynolds starred for Bulwell Church Institute’s “AJ” team in a fine 4-1 away win at Carlton & District Liberal Club on Burton Road. Reynolds took his singles frame to open the match for AJ before later partnering team captain, Ashley Field, to victory in the pairs frame.
Josh Morley also won two out of two for BCI AJ, while Bob Walker earned a consolation frame for Carlton.
BCI ‘B’ matched their stablemates’ 4-1 triumph at home to The Venue (Rainworth), Paul Wainwright Snr winning both of his singles frames and joining forces with Shaun Kilkie for pairs success. A 42 break propelled Andy Wain to a frame for the visitors.
Winter 2022-2023 season champions, Lenton Liberal Club, were the third team to record a 4-1 win on opening night. Dale Prime began the match with a 44 break for Lenton and followed it up with a second singles success while Northern Ireland international pool player, Phil Connolly, also contributed a singles and a pairs.
Manfred Corbin picked up the final singles frame to prevent a whitewash on the road for Academy Reds.
The final contest of the evening resulted in a 3-2 victory for Academy ‘A’ on home turf at the Spot On snooker club on Newark Street in Sneinton, near Nottingham city centre. Toby Bowley and Nick Sharp were on target with a singles frame apiece and combined for the pairs to secure the bonus points for their team.
Andy Diacopoulos had the definitive last word for visiting Towers (Mansfield) in the final frame of the match, however. Hot on the heels of winning the prestigious Open Singles earlier this month, Diacopoulos knocked in what opponent Bowley described as “a fine 99 clearance” to deposit what will surely prove a difficult marker to beat on the Summer 2023 high-breaks board.
Spot On Hucknall were also 4-1 home winners on the night, Patrick Ashurst and Darryl Clarke winning a singles each and the pairs frame together, but Phoenix Cue Sports (Eastwood) have since had to drop out of the League.
This means there is currently one space available for another team to join the League for the Summer 2023 season. Interested parties should contact league organiser, Jon Shapland, on 07779333087 within the next 48 hours.
Matches are played on a home-and-away basis, with only one table required – although home teams can elect to use two tables should they wish. All frames are contested using handicaps which are assigned to individual players and will be reviewed at the end of the summer.
