Bulwell Church Institute lock out front row

Monday Team League (Summer 2023)
Two deciding-frame home successes in the last two weeks have returned Bulwell Church Institute’s “AJ” side to the top of the nottinghamsnooker.com team league table. AJ sit two points clear of second-placed BCI ‘B’, the former also having a game in hand on their stablemates.
Last week saw BCI AJ victorious against The Venue. Don Merry was in fine form for the visitors, vanquishing both of his singles-frame opponents, but a singles apiece for Josh Morley and twelve-year old Jacob Reynolds plus the combination of the two on pairs proved enough for the Vere Street side.
Reynolds continued his hot streak as he took two singles frames by over 35 points each against Spot On Hucknall, this week. It came down to team captain, Ashley Field, to seal the five bonus points for BCI AJ in the final frame of the match though.
Previous league leaders, BCI B, now head the chasing pack after consecutive road defeats. Liam Morrisey snatched a singles frame on the black ball while Shaun Kilkie and Mark Morrisey won on pairs, but Spot On Hucknall proved too strong as they secured the other three singles and with them the match. Wayne Martin starred for the Vine Terrace side. The Linby-based potter compiled a 55 clearance to steal the first frame of the match from 42 points behind, before adding 43 and 32 breaks to make sure of the match for his team in his second singles frame. Patrick Ashurst also got on the high-break board with 42 in a winning singles effort.

BCI B’s more recent match was a trip to Lenton Liberal Club. The pairs frame was won by Mark Morrisey with Paul Wainwright Snr this time, but the BCI side could not take any of the four singles frames back to Bulwell with them. A 76 break for Dale Prime, comfortably the second-highest of all this season, was the highlight as he and Phil Connolly were ruthless when not paired with eachother.
Towers (Mansfield) were another team to record back-to-back deciding-frame victories in the last fortnight. Manfred Corbin won a frame each on pairs and singles to bring Academy Reds back to 2-2 from 2-0 down but, playing his first frame of the season, Andy Taylor nicked the decider on the black to secure the bonus points for Towers.
It was then Dan Moll that led the way for Towers as they travelled the short distance to The Venue in Rainworth. Andy Wain was successful in both of his singles frames for The Venue, but Moll would see Wain’s effort and raise it by also securing the pairs. Breaks of 47 and 33 saw Moll become the third player to score a hundred points in a frame this season in sealing the deciding singles.
The Botany Avenue-based side draw level in the league table with third-placed Spot On Hucknall, with the two set to face off when the first half of the season draws to a close on 3 July. Both are four points behind BCI B with a game in hand and a further two points behind leaders, BCI AJ, while The Venue’s two deciding-frame losses see them remain in sixth place but lose ground on those above them.
Reigning champions, Lenton Liberal Club find themselves sandwiched five points behind the tie for third place but eight ahead of sixth, following defeat at Carlton Liberal Club before the win over BCI B. Dale Prime was again on target for Lenton with two out of two on singles, but a singles apiece for James Bailie and Kevin Barlow plus the pairs between them was enough for the Burton Road team.
Rounding the results out, the all-Academy match produced a victory for the nominally-home “Reds” team. Manfred Corbin maintained his 100% singles record for the season and successfully combined with Rob Garrett on pairs for the second week in a row, as their team ran out 4-1 winners. Academy Reds are separated from The Venue and a place in the middle third of the table only on the head-to-head record.
A retraction: in a previous week’s round up, I falsely accused Lenton Liberal Club’s Dale Prime of hailing from the ghetto of Birmingham in the West Midlands. Prime actually originates from the piss-soaked streets of Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire.
